This area was originally settled in 1766, following the establishment of the Susquehanna Company. Based on the community charter, the area was claimed by the State of Connecticut, which eventually led to the Pennamite-Yankee War during which settlers from Connecticut and Pennsylvania fought for control over the lands. The Plymouth area had rich deposits of hard coal, and coal shipping started in 1807. The community also manufactured industrial products like miners' squibs, mining drilling machines, silk, lumber, and hosiery. In 1869, 110 miners died in a mine fire in Plymouth.
