Charlotte, North Carolina is named for King George III of England's wife Charlotte. Located in the new county of Mecklenburg along the Catawba River in south central North Carolina. Charlotte became known as the “Queen City.”
The first-ever Gold Rush in America began in Charlotte with the discovery of a 17-pound Gold Nugget in 1799. The nation’s first gold mine was operated by Reed Gold Mine, until 1914.
Today, Charlotte is the second largest metropolitan area in the Deep South and is the second largest banking center in the country, behind only New York City.
Tryon Street
Most of the Pictures & Videos below were taken while riding on Tryon Street. Tryon is the City’s Main Street.
Tryon Street does not align to the compass, as in many Colonial towns. Instead of running strictly north-south, it follows a natural ridgeline. That’s because it predates European settlement. Tyron Street follows the Nations Path, the great trading route of the Catawba and other Native American tribes, which ran from Georgia up to the Chesapeake Bay. Today’s Interstate 85 traces that same route.
The Tryon Street ridgeline is the reason behind Charlotte’s custom of calling its downtown “Uptown.” Head to Independence Square at the heart of the Center City; no matter which way you approach it, you’ll be moving gently upward.
